LONG BEACH, Calif.– Titans got the momentum going in their favor early Sunday night at George Allen Field. The early goal by Samantha McKenna helped the Titans break through to a 2-0 win over the 49ers. Fullerton now moves to 9-3-2 (2-1) for the season, as Long Beach State becomes 7-4-2 (1-1-1).
Freshmen Samantha McKenna scored the game-winning goal in the 14th minute. McKenna capitalized off the 49ers giveaway which led to her solo breakaway for her third goal of the season.
Senior Sarah Fajnor set the Titans over in the 36th minute with the assist from Samantha McKenna. Fajnor received the cross from McKenna and sent it home to notch her sixth goal of the season. Fajnor is now at the top of the leaderboard in goals for the Titans.
"This was a big test for us to bounce back from Thursday's match at Riverside," said head coach Demian Brown. "To handle the pressure and play as well as we did against Long Beach State is something to be proud of."
Defensively the Titans excelled and kept the 49ers chasing after the game all match long. Morgan Bertsch played all 90 mins of the match and recorded six saves.
Bertsch's physicality was shown on Sunday night after the 49ers put up 19 shots with six being on goal.
Although the 49ers did outshoot the Titans 19-8, it was not enough to get on the board.
Fullerton looks forward to playing UC Davis on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. PT at Titan Stadium.
