FULLERTON, Calif. -- The Cal State Fullerton women's soccer team remained unbeaten during its 2013 spring schedule, posting a 4-0 shutout of Cal Baptist and logging a 1-1 draw with Loyola Marymount in a March 23 doubleheader at Titan Stadium.
"It was good to see the consistency of our play throughout the entire day," Associate Head Coach Diego Bocanegra said. "To be able to play two full 90-minute games at the level in which we did is a testament to the hard work our women have been putting in throughout the spring. We took another step in the right direction as we continue to prepare for our fall season."
In the opener against the Lancers, freshman Christina Burkenroad and junior Kishi Smith each logged a pair of goals, one in each half, as the Titans rolled against the reigning back-to-back National Christian College Athletic Association champions. Burkenroad broke the seal with a goal in the 14th minute, taking advantage off a mistimed back pass from the Cal Baptist defense for the 1-0 lead, and Smith made it 2-0 just before the half on a cross by Nikki McCants.
After the break, Smith netted her second of the day in the 58th minute, one-touching a rebound off a long-distance strike by Adriana Gjonovich for the 3-0 lead. Burkenroad then capped the scoring with her second of the match (and her team-best third of the spring), beating a diving Lancer keeper off a cross by Janali West for the final 4-0 victory and the third shutout of the spring.
The nightcap saw the Lions strike early with a ninth-minute score before sophomore Rebecca Wilson found the back of the net late to forge the draw. LMU's goal was only the second surrendered by the Titans' defense in the spring (against 11 goals scored) and put the home side in a early hole, but persistence paid off as Wilson's quick feet found their way through the Lions' defense and poked home a shot past the LMU keeper for her first goal of the spring.
Cal State Fullerton returns to the pitch on Sunday (April 7) for another doubleheader. The Titans will host USC at 11 a.m. at Titan Stadium before taking on Cal State San Marcos later in the day on the infield of the Titan Track at 4 p.m. The Women of Troy and Cougars will meet in-between at 1:30 p.m. on the track field.
