FULLERTON, CA - Cal State Fullerton junior Toni Thomas scored 24 points and 15 rebounds to lead the way for the White team while freshman Ashley Richie scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Blue squad during the annual preseason Blue and White women's basketball scrimmage on Saturday morning at Titan Gym.
The two teams played a pair of 20-minute halves with the White team winning the opener, 34-29, and needing a three-minute overtime to defeat the Blue, 29-26, in the second game.
Thomas hit on 5-of-10 from the floor in the first game to help lead the White to victory as the team hit on 50 percent of its shots from the floor. Sophomore Jasmine Scott led the Blue team in the opening game with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including a pair of three-pointers.
Neither team shot the ball very well in the second game (32 percent for Blue, 31 percent for White), but the Blue squad hit the boards to the tune of a 31-27 advantage in rebounding. Senior forward Alison Bennett led all players with nine rebounds while Richie added seven boards to go with a team-high 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting.
Tied at 22-22 at the end of "regulation," freshman Lyndsey Grove scored the first basket of the three-minute overtime to put White up 24-22 and they outscored Blue, 7-4, to claim the win.
Thomas narrowly missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds while Grove, who finished the day with 15 points, contributed eight points and four rebounds.
Freshman Lauren Chow added nine points and four rebounds while splitting time between the two teams while junior Daviyonne Weathersby finished with eight points, four rebounds and four assists for the White team.
Cal State Fullerton opens its season with an exhibition game against Point Loma next Saturday (Nov. 3) at 2 p.m. at Titan Gym.
