Titans Retain Taste Title
Oct. 14, 2010
Anaheim, Calif. -
If the competition on the court is as hot as it was at the ESPN Zone "Kitchen Stadium," fans could be treated to an exciting 2010-11 basketball season.
Cal State Fullerton basketball coaches Marcia Foster and Bob Burton defended their Best Taste titles at Wednesday's Southern California Coaches Cooking Challenge presented by the ESPN Zone in Downtown Disney.
The men's and women's head coaches from all five Southern California Big West Conference schools donned their aprons and put forth their best effort in the kitchen as part of the second annual Big West Basketball Coaches Cooking Challenge. Defending champions Bob Burton and Marcia Foster, who earned three awards at the inaugural competition in 2009, took home top honors for taste while the four other awards were spread out between the coaches from UC Irvine (creativity), Cal State Northridge (presentation and "Top Chefs" honors), and UC Riverside ("Kitchen Nightmare" award).
With a spread of more than 100 ingredients available to them, the Burton-Foster combination put forth their spicy "BB Special," named after the Titans' eighth-year head men's basketball coach. With shrimp unveiled as the competition's secret ingredient, the Titans' duo whipped up a stir fry replete with jumbo shrimp, red and green bell peppers, onion, soy sauce, crushed red pepper, and Cajun seasoning served over rice.
The dishes were then judged by a panel that included former NBA power forward turned TV analyst Michael Cage; Brett Barnes, the general manager and operating partner of Duke's Restaurant in Huntington Beach; incumbent Associate Justice of the California Court of Appeal, Judge William Bedsworth; and award-winning columnist for the Orange County Register, Marcia Smith.
On the court, the Cal State Fullerton women's squad, which returns nine letter winners and four starters off of last year's squad, has begun practice and officially opens the season on Nov. 6 with an exhibition against Point Loma Nazarene at Titan Gym at 2 p.m.
The men's team, which brings back just four letter winners from the 2009-10 squad, officially opens practice on Friday (Oct. 15) and also begins its season on Nov. 6 with an exhibition against Cal State Los Angeles at 7:05 p.m.
