Moraga, Calif. - Sierra Chambers scored 19 points including a driving scoop shot with 3.7 seconds to play Saturday afternoon to lift Saint Mary's to a 71-70 non-conference women's basketball victory over Cal State Fullerton.
Daviyonne Weathersby's long 3-point try at the buzzer missed and the Titans fell to 1-9 with their eighth consecutive loss despite 29 points by Toni Thomas and 22 by Lauren Chow. Saint Mary's improved to 7-8.
Chow hit a 3-pointer to give Fullerton a 70-69 lead with 48 seconds remaining. Saint Mary's failed to score but both Allison Bennett(. at 26 seconds) and Jasmine Scott (at 23 seconds) missed the front end of bonus free-throw situations and the Gaels took advantage as Chambers penetrated the left side of the lane.
Fullerton held the biggest lead of the game at 12 points at 56-44 on a Lyndsey Grove layup. Saint Mary's rallied methodically and took a 67-65 lead at 1:55 on two free throws by Serena Benavente. But Thomas tied it with a layup before Chambers hit a jumper for a 69-67 SMC lead.
Fullerton led at the half, 38-35, after squandering an 8-point lead and then erasing a 6-point Saint Mary's advantage.
Louella Tomlinson added 15 points, 8 rebounds and 8 blocked shots for the Gaels. Benavente finished with 11 points.
Thomas hit a career-high 4 3-point field goals in only 5 tries and Chow hit 4 of 8. But the TItans were only 4 of 8 from the foul line to 10 of 13 for Saint Mary's.
Fullerton plays again at Santa Clara at 5 p.m. on Monday night.
