DES MOINES, IA - Drake senior forward Jill Martin scored a game-high 17 points to go with nine rebounds to help lead the host Bulldogs to a 58-43 victory over visiting Cal State Fullerton on Sunday afternoon at the Knapp Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
The loss was the third straight for the Titans, who fell to 1-3 overall on the year. Drake remained perfect on the season, improving to 3-0 overall for the first time since the 1994-95 campaign.
Sophomore Toni Thomas led Cal State Fullerton with a team-high 15 points and nine rebounds - her fourth consecutive double-digit scoring performance to start the year and the 10th straight game with 10-or-more points dating back to last season.
Senior India McDaniel was also in double figures with 12 points and six rebounds, including 8-of-11 from the free throw line.
Fullerton got off to the quick start as a pair of free throws by Thomas and a jumper by senior Charlee Underwood gave the Titans the quick 4-0 lead, but that would not last long as an 11-2 run by the Bulldogs gave them a five-point advantage with just over 12 minutes remaining.
That lead would grow to as many as 10 points with just under three minutes remaining as Drake took a 25-18 advantage into the lockerroom at halftime.
The Bulldogs then scored 13 of the first 18 points of the second half to build a 15-point lead seven minutes into the period and the Bulldogs would never look back. Drake would lead by as many as 21 points with eight minutes remanining and Fullerton would not get closer than 14 points the rest of the way.
Underwood, the Titans' leading scorer entering the game, was held to just four points on 2-of-9 shooting after eclipsing the 20-point mark in each of her last two games.
The Titans were doomed by a poor shooting day from the floor as Fullerton hit on only 28 percent of their shots - including just 25 percent from the field (8-for-32) in the second half.
Drake shot just over 44 percent for the game - including a 54 percent clip in the second half to pull away for the win.
Cal State Fullerton closes out its six-game season-opening road trip with a Thanksgiving holiday appearance at the Wingate Inn Thanksgiving Classic hosted by Montana State in Bozeman, Mont.
The Titans open tournament play on Friday (Nov. 24) against the host Bobcats at 6:30 p.m. (PT) with Texas-Arlington and North Dakota State battling in the event's first game.
The losers of the first day's match-ups will meet in the third-place game on Saturday (Nov. 25) at 4 p.m. (PT) with the championship to be decided at 6:30 p.m. (PT).
