FULLERTON, CA - Cal State Fullerton junior Toni Thomas scored a game-high 18 points and led two other teammates in double figures, helping lift the Titans to an 84-69 exhibition victory over visiting Point Loma Nazarene on Saturday afternoon at Titan Gym.
Thomas hit 7-of-15 from field and grabbed eight rebounds in the victory. She was joined in double figures by freshman Lauren Chow, who had 14 points, and freshman Ashley Richie, who finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Amanda Franz and Shawmonee Holm finished with 14 and 11 points off the bench, respectively, to led the Sea Lions.
Fullerton jumped out to a quick lead, scoring the first 12 points of the game before Point Loma got on the board via a lay-up by Kerra Sutton-Wodarski with just under five minutes gone in the first half.
Bolstered by a 50 percent shooting performance in the first half, the Titans led wire-to-wire, extending their lead to as many as 20 points with 11:06 remaining in the period, but a 14-4 run brought the Sea Lions back to within 12 points with 8:42 remaining and they trailed by that margin at the break, 43-31.
That hot shooting hand turned against Fullerton in the second half as Point Loma, which trailed by as many as 17 points, whittled the lead down to only 10 points with just under five minutes to go thanks to an 8-2 run.
The Titans, who shot just 38 percent in the second half, held strong, using a 10-4 run over a three-minute span to rebuild their lead to 18 points and cruise to the victory.
Fullerton's defense forced Point Loma into 27 turnovers on the afternoon, converting those miscues into 24 points of its own and tallying 18 steals on the day. Richie and junior Daviyonne Weathersby, who finished with nine points and nine assists, led the way with five steals apiece while Chow swiped four of her own.
Cal State Fullerton returns to the court on Tuesday (Nov. 6) at 6 p.m. as the Titans travel to Cal Poly Pomona for their second and final exhibition game of the year before opening the regular season on Nov. 10 at Utah Valley State.
