DAVIS, CA - UC Davis' Paige Mintun netted a double-double with a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds and led two teammates in double figures to help lift the host Aggies to an 80-52 victory over Cal State Fullerton in the regular season finale for both teams on Saturday night at The Pavilion in Davis, Calif.
The loss ends the Titans' regular season at 14-16 overall and an even 8-8 mark in Big West Conference play, dropping them into the No. 6 seed for next week's conference tournament at the Anaheim Convention Center where they will face seventh-seeded UC Irvine on Wednesday afternoon (March 10) at approximately 2:30 p.m.
UC Davis improved to 20-9 overall and 12-4 in league play, earning them the Big West regular season title and No. 1-overall seed in the tournament. The Aggies receive a double-bye into the semifinals and will meet the lowest-remaining seed on Friday (March 12) at noon.
Junior Lyndsey Grove hit 9-of-14 from the floor and scored 20 points to pace the Titans' offense, which was held to just 33 percent shooting for the game. Sophomore Megan Richardson was also in double figures, scoring 10 of her 14 points in the second half and finishing 5-of-11 from the floor. No other Fullerton player finished with more than six points.
After trailing by as many as five points in the opening four minutes, a 6-0 run capped by a lay-up by Grove gave the Titans their only lead of the game at 12-11 with 11:23 to play. From that point on, the Aggies seized control, exploding for a 17-4 run to build a 12-point lead at 26-14 with just under seven minutes to play and they never looked back.
Fullerton got no closer than seven points in the first half as UC Davis closed out the final 4:32 of the period on a 16-2 run to lead 44-23 at the break.
That lead grew to as many as 36 points thanks to a 15-0 run to start the second half by the Aggies, who sent the Titans to their worst Big West since a 32-point loss to UC Davis on Jan. 17, 2008, and their second-largest of the season.
The Aggies shot just under 46 percent from the field for the game and went to the line 27 times on the night (making 23) to just eight attempts for Fullerton. UC Davis also held a, 41-33, advantage on the boards and turned 23 Titan turnovers into 31 points on the night.
Fullerton's Big West tournament game against UC Irvine will be preceeded by No. 5 UC Santa Barbara against No. 8 Pacific at noon. UC Riverside, the No. 3 seed, will meet the lowest remaining seed with No. 4 Long Beach State taking on the highest-remaining seed. No. 1 UC Davis and No. 2 Cal Poly then await the winners in the semifinal round.
The championship game will be held on Saturday (March 13) at 1 p.m. and will be televised on Fox Sports Net-Prime Ticket.
