Second-Half Run Lifts Mustangs Over Titans
Feb. 24, 2011
SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA - Cal Poly's Caroline Reeves scored a game-high 16 points to lead three teammates in double figures and the Mustangs used a 12-2 run to break open a one-point game at the half en route to a 78-58 victory over Cal State Fullerton on Thursday night at Mott Gym in San Luis Obispo, CA.
The Titans fell to 9-19 overall on the year and 5-10 in Big West Conference play, losing for the fifth time in their last six games overall and the fifth consecutive time on the road. Fullerton fell to eighth place in the standings, one-half game behind Pacific, which defeated UC Irvine on Thursday, and a game ahead of Cal State Northridge (4-9 in conference play), which plays at UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, for the final Big West Tournament berth.
First-place Cal Poly retained its hold on the top spot, improving to 15-10 overall and 11-3 in league play.
Junior Lauren Chow led Fullerton with 14 points and senior Ashley Richie added 10 points, but no other Titans finished in double figures as leading scorers Megan Richardson and Lyndsey Grove were held to just five points combined on 2-of-18 shooting.
Reeves, who was held to just four points in the first meeting between the two teams, hit 7-of-13 from the field in 25 minutes. Jonae Ervin and Molly Schlemer added 13 and 12 points, respectively, off the bench while Abby Bloetscher finished with 12 points and nine rebounds.
Despite hitting just 38 percent from the field in the first half, the Titans were down by just one point at the break, using a trio of three-pointers to offset a 50 percent shooting half by the Mustangs, who took a 31-30 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Cal Poly, which improved to 7-2 at home while winning its sixth-straight at Mott Gym, then took control to start the second half, scoring the first 10 points of the period as part of a 12-2 run, building an 11-point lead and never looking back. Fullerton would come no closer than eight points with 13:28 to play as an 18-7 run by the Mustangs over the next eight-plus minutes sealed the win.
Inside, Cal Poly dominated the paint, outscoring the Titans by a 48-26 count and outrebounding them, 38-31, for the game.
Cal State Fullerton closes out the 2010-11 regular season next Saturday (March 5) at 3 p.m. as the Titans host UC Davis at Titan Gym. Fullerton's senior class of Ashley Richie, Katie Avila, Britt Peters, Lyndsey Grove, and Jenna Breite will be honored prior to tip-off as part of "Senior Night" festivities.
