Strong Second Half Lifts Highlanders Past Titans
Feb. 5, 2011
RIVERSIDE, CA - UC Riverside's Brittany Waddell finished with a game-high 24 points and the Highlanders shot 56 percent in the second half en route to a 74-60 Big West Conference women's basketball victory on Saturday night at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside, CA.
The Titans (8-16 overall, 4-7 in the Big West) lost their second straight contest and fell for the fourth time in the last five games while the Highlanders improved to 13-9 overall and 6-3 in league play.
Junior Megan Richardson led Fullerton with a team-high 17 points on 6-of-17 shooting while Lyndsey Grove finished with 15 points before fouling out. Richardson, in the process, moved into 11th place on the school's scoring chart, surpassing Cheryl Peterson (1987-91).
Waddell, who reached the 1,000 career point milestone early in the second half, hit 6-of-12 from the field and a perfect 8-for-8 from the line en route to her game high while Alyssa Morris joined her in double figures with 19 points.
A 10-4 run to start the second half broke open a one-point game at halftime and, after the Titans closed to within five points, the Highlanders exploded for a 20-9 run over a nine-minute span to build a 16-point advantage and never look back.
UC Riverside led by as many as 17 points before a 14-6 run by the Titans brought the deficit back to single digits, but the Highlanders hit 8-of-8 from the line (and 20-for-28 overall for the game) in the final minute to seal the win.
Fullerton shot just 33 percent from the floor for the game to 48 percent for UCR, but the Highlanders held a 42-28 advantage on the boards and ran to the victory despite having two players foul out and committing 20 turnovers on the night.
Cal State Fullerton returns to the court next weekend with a light week, traveling to Cal State Northridge on Saturday (Feb. 12) for a 4 p.m. tip-off at the Matadome.
