FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton women's basketball team lost its season opener to Montana State 63-47 at Titan Gym Sunday afternoon behind 24 points from Bobcats junior Jasmine Hommes and 12 points from Alexa Dawkins.
Fullerton came out of the gates fast, leading the MSU 6-0 less than two minutes after the opening tip-off. But the Bobcats put an end to the run, and to the only lead the Titans would have all night, on back-to-back three-pointers from Lindsay Stockton and Hommes.
Montana State then went on a 12-point run that went unanswered by the Titans, making the score 12-6 with 15:43 to play in the opening half. Fullerton would get within two points of MSU later in the half when Amanda Tivenius scored a left-handed running layup to make the score 18-16, That was as close as the Titans would get to the Bobcats the rest of the night, as lead for Montana State at halftime, led by Hommes' 16 points, stretched to 30-21.
The teams traded baskets to start of the second half, but the Bobcats extended their lead further to 43-28 with 15:17 left to play in the game on another jumper by Hommes. Fullerton freshman Daeja Smith was a force in the final half shooting 3-of-4 from the field to finish with six points for the game. Miles scored nine of her 12 points in the second half, but it was not enough to close the gap as the Bobcats shot 43 percent from the field to close it out.
