FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton men's soccer dropped its first home game at Titan Stadium since Sept. 8, falling Friday night to UC Davis 2-1 in a hard-fought match.
The Titans were outshot 10 to five in the first however they came up in the second half to outshot the Aggies four to one to finish with nine shots compared to the Aggies 11. Fullerton forced UC Davis to take 16 fouls compared to their seven. The Titans outearned UC Davis seven to six in corner kicks, including four to one corners in the second half.
First-year transfer Mark Hernandez scored his second goal of the season on a perfect cross from junior Ross McPhie on a perfect cross into the six-yard box that Hernandez chipped in with his right foot to give the Titans a 1-0 lead in 12th minute.
Diego Sanchez made a great pass to McPhie to which lead to the goal, picking up his team-leading fourth of assist of the season. Hernandez led the team with four shots while Samuel Goni was second with two shots.
UC Davis even up the game in the 35th minute on an assisted goal from Marte Formico on a shot from just outside the six-yard box. The Aggies took the lead in the 44th minute of the game on a header from Chase Rhode off of the corner kick from Adam Mickelson.
The Titans made a valiant effort at a comeback in the second half, including three shots in the final minute of the game to try and tie the game up. Bass Sarr had a shot in the final minute that appeared to go over the line before the Aggies goalkeeper Wallis Lapsley made a diving play on it, however, the officials saw otherwise.
Fullerton returns to action Saturday night at Titan Stadium for its second game of the three game home stand against Sacramento State at 7 p.m. PT.
