Host UC Irvine rallied from 14 strokes down in the third and final round Tuesday afternoon to force a playoff which the Anteaters won on the first hole over Santa Clara to capture the championship of the Anteater Invitational at Mesa Verde Country Club.
Cal State Fullerton, which was in eighth place after two rounds, dropped to tenth. John San Juan, who carded a pair of 70s on the first two rounds, shot 79 (for a 219) on the final round to tie for 25th overall and edge teammate Dakota Duerr (T 36th at 220) by one stroke.
Fullerton competes again this weekend starting Sunday at the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational in Cedar City, Utah.
