Led by David Lyons' 2-under par 214 (69-72-73), the Cal State Fullerton men's golf team placed 13th among 16 teams Tuesday at the Palouse Cougar Collegiate Invitational hosted by Washington State. He tied for 16th among individuals.
Mark Anguiano, like Lyons a newcomer to this year's team, was third among Fullerton golfers at 220 (72-71-77) after fading on Tuesday with a 77. Veteran Scott Rubzin edged his teammate for second best among the Titans with a 219 (73-72-74).
Host Washington State won its tournament by 12 strokes with an 827 ahead of Idaho's 839. Portland, runnerup after each of the first two rounds, faded Tuesday to third with a score of 294 for a total of 847. Jay Myers of San Jose State and Portland's Nick Chianello broke the tourney record with opening rounds of 64 but the individual titlist was Damian Telles of Idaho at 15-under-par 201 (66-70-65).
Fullerton's next competition is at the Oral Roberts Invitational on Sept. 27-28 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Fullerton's women's team competes next week in Pullman at the women's version of the Cougar Invitational.
