Titans Return to Links for Spring Opener

THIS WEEK: After taking home four top-three finishes during the fall portion of the 2013-2014 season, the Cal State Fullerton men's golf team is ready to begin the spring portion of its schedule this week as one of 14 teams competing at the Arizona Intercollegiate tournament hosted by the University of Arizona beginning on Monday, in Tucson, Ariz. 

THE COURSE: The two-day event will be contested at the brand new Sewailo Golf Club, playing at 7,262 yards from the tournament tees and par 71 for the 54-hole event. Thirty-six holes will be played on Monday, and the remaining 18 on Tuesday, with the low four of five scores counted each round for the team total. Play begins at 8 a.m. for the first two rounds on Monday, and concludes with an 8 a.m. tee-off for the final 18 holes on Tuesday followed by an awards ceremony.

THE FIELD: Competing alongside the Titans and Wildcats, will be squads from BYU, Cal, George Washington, James Madison, Loyola Marymount, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Oregon State, Pacific, Southern Cal, UC Riverside and UTEP.

IN THE RANKINGS: Cal State Fullerton is ranked No. 26 in the nation according to the Golfstat.com NCAA Head-to-Head rankings, facing a field that features six teams ranked in the top 100: No. 4 California, No. 19 New Mexico, No. 25 Southern California, No. 38 BYU, No. 47 Oregon State, No. 73 New Mexico State.

According to the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, Fullerton is No. 54 in the nation with six competitors in this week's field ranked among the top 70: No. 4 California, No. 14 New Mexico, No. 22 Southern California, No. 38 BYU, No. 49 Oregon State, No. 68 New Mexico State.

INTO THE DESERT: This week will mark the Titans' second trip to compete in the Arizona Intercollegiate since the program was reinstated in 2009-10. Last year Cal State Fullerton finished in eighth-place with a total score of 872 (+20).

A LOOK BACK: Senior Mark Anguiano finished at (-2, 70) in the final round (-15, 201 overall) to lead the Titans to a first place finish at the Warrior Wave Princeville Intercollegiate at the Makai Golf Club on the North Shore of Kauai on Nov. 4-6, 2013. The Titans shot an 822 (272-274-276) to finish 42-under par, and were able to edge out the Cardinals of Louisville, who entered the last three holes tied with CSF. Junior Ryan Tetrault fired a 7-under 72 in the final round to finish tied for sixth (-11, 205). Senior Josh Park shot a three-under-par in both the second and third rounds to finish tied for 18th (-6, 210). Corey Gard entered the clubhouse with a 211 (-5) over three rounds. Kyle De Silva tied for 52nd with a one-over 217 over the three rounds.

MARK ME UNDER-PAR: Senior Mark Anguiano led the Titans during the fall with a 68.17 scoring average and a first-place tie at the Warrior Princeville Invite in Princeville, Hawai'i, second-place tie at the Bill Cullum Invitational in Simi Valley, Calif., and second-place finishes at the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate in Pullman, Wash., and the Dash Thomas Memorial in Boise, Idaho. Anguiano's lowest round of 65 (-5) was posted at the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate on Sept. 10, 2013. 

START STRONG FINISH STRONG: The Titans posted one round all of fall in which all five participants for were able to finish at par of better in 2013. In turn, the Titans were crowned the tournament champions in Princeville, Hawai'i.

• According to Golfstat.com and Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings the Titans will be competing against No. 4 California at the Arizona Intercollegiate. The fourth-ranked Golden Bears finished in first place in three of their five fall tournaments.

• Through fall 2013, four Titans have posted lower scoring averages compared to all of last season: Mark Anguiano (68.17), Corey Gard (70.25), Ryan Tetrault (70.92) and Joshua Park (72.78).

• Freshman Kyle De Silva shot his career best round of 67 during the first round of the Warrior Wave Princeville on Nov. 4, 2012. Overall, De Silva finished one-over par (217) to tie for 52nd place.
