Titans Travel to UC Davis to Compete in Winchester Classic

THIS WEEK: After finishing second at the Anteater Invitational on Mar. 25-26, the Cal State Fullerton men's golf team returns to the links for the Winchester Classic in Meadow Vista, Calif., on Apr. 19-21. Fullerton will compete at the Winchester Country Club as one of 11 teams competing in the three-day tournament hosted by UC Davis and Nevada.

THE COURSE: The three-day event will be contested at the Winchester Country Club, playing at 7,144 yards from the tournament tees and par 72 for the 54-hole event. Play begins in the morning (11 a.m.) for the first round on Friday (Apr. 19), Saturday (Apr. 20, 11 a.m.) for the second round, and will conclude on Sunday (Apr. 21) for the final 18 holes, starting at 7:40 a.m.

THE FIELD: Competing alongside the Titans will be squads from Fresno State, Idaho, Long Beach State, North Dakota, Oklahoma Christian (Div. II), Sacramento State, UC Santa Barbara, William Jessup (NAIA), and co-hosts Nevada and UC Davis.

IN THE RANKINGS: Cal State Fullerton is ranked No. 84 in the nation according to the Golfstat.com NCAA Head-to-Head rankings and enters the tournament as the third highest ranked team: Fresno State is No. 60, UC Davis is No. 74, UC Santa Barbara is No. 9,7, Long Beach State is No. 99, Idaho is No. 111. Nevada is No. 117, Sacramento State is No. 146, and William Jessup is ranked No. 38 in NAIA rankings. North Dakota nor Oklahoma Christian are ranked according to Golf Stat.com

According to the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, Fullerton is No. 93 in the nation and faces a field: UC Davis (#65), Fresno State (#72), Long Beach State (#81), UC Santa Barbara (#102), Idaho (#107), Nevada (#111), Sacramento State (#149), North Dakota (#265). Oklahoma Christian (Div. II) nor William Jessup (NAIA) are ranked according to Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings.

WINCHESTER CLASSIC: This year's Winchester Classic will be the second annual Winchester Classic and the first time that Cal State Fullerton has competed in the tournament. Last season, Fresno State won the event posting a score of 874 (+10), while Jarred Bossio of Idaho won the individual competition after shooting a 216 (E) and a first round 69 (-3). 

ANTEATER INVITATIONAL: After entering the last round atop the leaderboard, the Cal State Fullerton men's golf team faded in the last round, slipping down to second place to close out the 2013 Anteater Invitational hosted by UC Irvine in Laguna Niguel, Calif.

Senior Dakota Duerr was the highest finishing Titan, after shooting a 74 on Tuesday and finishing five-over par overall. Duerr finished tied for sixth overall after shooting 221, while junior Mark Anguiano finished tied for 10th after shooting a third round 76 and 223 overall. Duerr finished the tournament with the most pars (37) and Anguiano finished with the second most (36).

After entering the day five-over par, junior Corey Gard shot a final round 75 (+3) to finish tied for 15th place. Gard contributed on Tuesday with three birdies and nine total in the tournament. After finishing second at the Sacramento State Invitational on Mar. 12, sophomore Ryan Tetrault shot a final round 76 to finish with an overall score of 226.

Freshman Mark Jensma shot a final round 77 (+5) and 234 overall to finish tied for 35th overall. Jensma also added an eagle in the tournament. Michael Choe, competing as an individual, finished the tournament with a score of 237. Choe shot a 78 in the final round and finished tied for 46th.

BEST FINISH AT ANTEATER INVITATIONAL: Since the program was reinstated in 2009, the Titans have finished 10th, 11th, and 4th at the Anteater Invitational. Even though shooting +30 (894) in Laguna Niguel, Calif. the Fullerton men's golf team had their best team finish at the tournament hosted by UC Irvine after finishing second behind Long Beach State.

NO PAR FOR YOU: The Titans did not have one player shoot a round at par or better in the Anteater Invitational. This was the first time all season that Fullerton did not shoot a round at par or better.

BEFORE BIG WEST CHAMPIONSHIP: The Winchester Classic is the last tournament of the season before Fullerton competes in the Big West Championship. Last season the Titans finished fourth at the Anteater Invitational before competing in the Big West Championships. Fullerton finished in first place in 2010 at the UC Riverside Dual in Moreno Valley, Calif. before participating in the Big West Championships.

TRAVELING NORTH: This will mark the second time this season that the Titans will travel to Northern California. Fullerton competed at the Sacramento State Invitational on Mar.11-12, 2013 finishing in second place (-3, 861) behind UC Santa Barbara (-10, 854).

FRESHMEN COMPETING: The Titans have three freshmen on the roster this season and at least one freshman has competed in the last seven tournaments. Redshirt Freshman Mark Jensma and true freshman Michael Choe have both competed in six tournaments this season.

YOU CAN DUERR IT: Junior Dakota Duerr leads the team with a 72.55 scoring average and had the highest individual finish this season when he finished second at the Del Walker Intercollegiate in Long Beach, Calif. on Feb. 25-26, 2013.

LOWEST TEAM SCORE: The Titans shot their lowest 54-team score at the Del Walker Intercollegiate on Feb. 25-26 with a total score of 849. Fullerton previously shot a 851 at the Firestone Grill Invitational in San Luis Obispo, Calif. on Oct. 8-9, 2012.

NEW CAREER HIGHS: Cal State Fullerton had six different athletes get new career highs in the Del Walker Intercollegiate. Multiple Titans had new career best tournament scores after two rounds.

TAP-INS:

• Ryan Tetrault shot a career best round of 66 in the second round of the Folino Invitational. His best career round was a 68 at the Firestone Grill Invitational in the third round on Oct. 9, 2012. Tetrault also earned his best finish at the Sacramento State Collegiate on Mar. 11-12.

• Dakota Duerr posted a 68 in the second and third round during the Del Walker Intercollegiate, marking the second time a Titan has shot back-to-back rounds of 68 in a tournament (Mark Anguiano, Arizona Intercollegiate, Jan. 28-29, 2013).

• Dakota Duerr shot the lowest 54-hole individual score since the program's reinstatement, when he shot a 207 at the Del Walker Intercollegiate on Feb. 25-26.

• Duerr has finished as the best Fullerton golfer in five of nine tournaments this season. He finished tied for sixth at the Anteater Invitational (+5, 221).

• Cal State Fullerton had six golfers shoot a 69 or better at the Del Walker Intercollegiate in Long Beach, Calif.

• The Titans tied their lowest team round of the 2012-13 season during the Del Walker Intercollegiate with a score of 281 on Feb. 26, 2013. (Arizona Intercollegiate 2nd Round)

• Six Titans have taken over 1,000 strokes on the season (Ryan Tetrault 1,764; Mark Anguiano 1,757; Corey Gard 1,756; Dakota Duerr 1,671; Michael Choe 1,152; Mark Jensma 1,117)
