Titans Travel Up North for Sacramento State Invitational

THIS WEEK: After having the past weekend off, the Cal State Fullerton men's golf team returns to the links after finishing fourth at the Del Walker Intercollegiate Classic in Long Beach, Calif., on Feb. 25-26. This week the team travels north to Sacramento, Calif. to participate in the Sacramento State Invitational presented by The Old Spaghetti Factory as one of 15 teams competing in the two-day tournament on Mar. 11-12.

THE COURSE: The two-day event will be contested at the Valley Hi Country Club, playing at 7,009 yards from the tournament tees and par 72 for the 54-hole event. Play begins in the morning for the first and second round on Monday and will conclude Tuesday for the final 18 holes.  

THE FIELD: Competing alongside the Titans will be squads from Boise State, Houston Baptist, Seattle University, UC Santa Barbara, Chico State, Loyola Marymount, South Dakota, University of Nebraska Omaha, CSU Bakersfield, Nevada, Southern Utah, USC Upstate, Sacramento State, University of Texas-Pan American.

IN THE RANKINGS: Cal State Fullerton is ranked No. 80 in the nation according to the Golfstat.com NCAA Head-to-Head rankings and is the highest ranked team in the field: UC Santa Barbara is No. 97, Nevada is No. 111, Houston Baptist is No. 127, Loyola Marymount is No. 128, Sacramento State is No. 146, Southern Utah is No. 161, USC Upstate is No. 189, Boise State is No. 195, Seattle University is No. 226, University Texas Pan-American is No. 236, CSU Bakersfield is No. 242, South Dakota is No. 245, and Chico State is ranked No. 37 in the division two rankings. University Nebraska-Omaha is not eligible for postseason play.

According to the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, Fullerton is No. 90 in the nation and faces a the field: UC Santa Barbara (#97), Nevada (#104), Houston Baptist (#121), Loyola Marymount (#128), Sacramento State (#152), USC Upstate (#156), Southern Utah (#173), Boise State (#186), Seattle University (#215), University Texas Pan-American (#238), South Dakota (#246), University of Nebraska-Omaha (#265).

SACRAMENTO STATE INVITATIONAL: This is the first time that the Titans will travel to Sacramento to compete in the Sacramento State Invitational since the program's reinstatement in 2009.

DEL WALKER GOLF CLASSIC: Competing in Del Walker Intercollegiate Golf Classic for the third time The Titans shot 849 (+9) over two days of play, including a score of 281 (+1) on Tuesday afternoon. The Titans entered the day in the fourth place after shooting a 284 in round one and round two on Monday. Dakota Duerr finished tied for second place three-under par overall and shot back to back rounds of 68 to end the tournament. Cal State Michael Choe, who was competing as an individual, finished in 18th place after shooting a 78 in round three. Choe finished 5-over par (215). Fullerton sophomore Ryan Tetrault finished in ninth place with an overall score of 212 (+2). Junior Corey Gard (213, +3) ended the tournament tied for 13th place after recording a score of 73 (+3) on Tuesday.
Mark Anguiano shot a 220 (+10) tied for 29th place in the standings. Josh Park, who also competed as an individual, finished the tournament with a score of 220 to also tie for 29th place. Mark Jensma finished 32nd with final overall score of 221.

YOU CAN DUERR IT: Junior Dakota Duerr leads the team with a 72.55 scoring average and had the highest individual finish this season when he finished second at the Del Walker Intercollegiate in Long Beach, Calif. on Feb. 25-26, 2013.

LOWEST TEAM SCORE: The Titans shot their lowest 54-team score at the Del Walker Intercollegiate on Feb. 25-26 with a total score of 849. Fullerton previously shot an 851 at the Firestone Grill Invitational in San Luis Obispo, Calif. on Oct. 8-9, 2012.

NEW CAREER HIGHS: Cal State Fullerton had six different athletes get new career highs in the Del Walker Intercollegiate. Multiple Titans had new career best tournament scores after two rounds.

THIRD ROUNDS A CHARM: In three of the four fall tournaments, a Titan athlete shot a team-best round in the third round:

TAP-INS:

• Ryan Tetrault shot a career best round of 66 in the second round of the Folino Invitational. His best career round was a 68 at the Firestone Grill Invitational in the third round on Oct. 9, 2012.

• Dakota Duerr posted a 68 in the second and third round during the Del Walker Intercollegiate, marking the second time a Titan has shot back-to-back rounds of 68 in a tournament (Mark Anguiano, Arizona Intercollegiate, Jan. 28-29, 2013).

• Dakota Duerr shot the lowest 54-hole individual score since the program's reinstatement, when he shot a 207 at the Del Walker Intercollegiate on Feb. 25-26.

• Cal State Fullerton had six golfers shoot a 69 or better at the Del Walker Intercollegiate in Long Beach, Calif.

• The Titans tied their lowest team round of the 2012-13 season during the Del Walker Intercollegiate with a score of 281 on Feb. 26, 2013. (Arizona Intercollegiate 2nd Round)
