IN HAWAI'I: The Titans opened the season in the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic in Honolulu. suffering three narrow losses. They got beat by Central Michigan (70-67) on a 3-pointer at the buzzer, by Hawai'i (84-70) when the hosts scored the final 14 points of the game in the final 3:12 and by Montana State (80-76), twice failing to defensively rebound missed free throws in the final 29 seconds.
EXHIBITION RECAPS: The Titans had a closed scrimmage at home vs. Pepperdine on Oct. 30 and a Nov. 6 home exhibition with Cal State L.A. to help prepare for the season opener. The Titans won the latter, 79-67, with Devon Peltier scoring a game-high 20 points and Orane Chin delivering an impressive double-double of 17 points and 17 rebounds. Fullerton hit 10 of 21 3-point field goals.
NO EXPERIENCE: With no two-years or more lettermen, the Titans field a roster that has a total of only nine seasons of Div. I experience (Johnson 3, Hardy 2, Chin 2, Williams 1 and Peltier 1) and only four of those are at Fullerton (Johnson, Chin, Williams and Peltier 1 each). With Johnson and Hardy sidelined, the Titans took only eight healthy scholarship players to Oahu with a total of four seasons of Div. I experience.
THE COACH: Bob Burton is 123-95 in his first seven-plus seasons at Cal State Fullerton and career. He has the most victories at the Div. I level and trails only Alex Omalev (139-176 in 12 years) all-time. Burton's winning percentage of .564 trails only Bobby Dye (.583, 109-78).
ROAD WARRIORS: Under Bob Burton, the Titans have made dramatic strides as a road team. In the past six seasons plus three game this year, they are 58-55 (.513) away from Titan Gym (includes 11-15 on neutral floors). For the previous 10 seasons (1994-95 thru 2003-04) the combined road record was 30-115 (.207). With a 3-11 mark in his first season (2003-04), Burton's total CSF road record is 61-66 (.480).
ABOUT THE TOREROS: San Diego takes a 1-1 record into a Friday night home game vs. Boise State. USD beat Occidental, 83-66, and lost at Stanford, 64-48. Fourth-year Head Coach Bill Grier is 50-52. Guard Darian Norris is the early sacoring leader (11.5 ppg) but four other players are averaging at least 8.0 ppg. USD is shooting 49 percent from the floor (39.5 from the 3-point line) and 82 percent at the foul line. USD returns a game at Titan Gym on Dec. 4.
SERIES HISTORY: Fullerton leads the all-time series, 16-11, but the teams have not played in almost a decade and never before in Jenny Craig Pavilion. USD won the last two meetings, both in the 1999-2000 season -- 81-77 in Titan Gym on Nov. 23, 1999, and 78-72, on Jan. 8, 2000, in San Diego in matchups of Head Coaches Bob Hawking and Brad Holland. Fullerton's last win was by a score of 76-70 on Dec. 6, 1997, in Titan Gym.
