Dec. 23, 2009
Logan, Utah - Kenneth Faried scored 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds Wednesday evening to lead Morehead State to a 69-62 victory over Cal State Fullerton in the Basketball Travelers Invitational at Utah State.
The Eagles took third place in the 3-day tourney with their first win in three tries while improving to 5-6. The Titans got 15 points off the bench from Devon Peltier but fell to 4-6 with their third loss in three games and their 24th in a row at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
Demonte Harper added 18 points and Maze Stallworth had 13 for Morehead State. Fullerton committed 23 turnovers to only 10 for the Eagles.
The Eagles used a 14-1 surge over the final 5 minutes to pull out the back-and-forth affair. Orane Chin, who finished with 11 points, had given the Titans a 61-55 lead with a floating jumper. The Titans led by 7 earlier in the half while the Eagles' biggest lead was 5 points in each half until the final mnute.
Jer'Vaughn Johnson had 10 points and 8 rebounds and Bryce Webster had 8 points and 8 rebounds before both fouled out, mostly incurred while trying to stop Faried, the pre-season player of the year in the Ohio Valley Conference.
"Costly turnovers were the difference," said CSF Coach Bob Burton. "We had control of the game and didnd't take care of the basketball.
"It was a third game in three nights for both teams and both were tired. We played hard.
"We're disappointed to go 0-3 in the tournament but I think we found out some things about our team."
The scored was tied 10 times and there were 13 lead changes.
Faried converted a 3-point play to cut the margin to 61-58 at the 4:33 mark. His free throws at 3:54 made it 61-60 and a layup by Harper put the Eagles ahead to stay at 62-61 with 3:40 left as they capitalized on a pair of CSF turnovers against a full-court press.
Another 3-point play by Faried made it 65-61. Chin hit one free throw to make it 65-62 and Streeter had a chance to tie it with a 3-pointer but he missed at 1:09. Fullerton forced a turnover but Chin missed a jumper and the Titans had to start fouling.
A sequence of four consecutive Fullerton turnovers early in the second half helped Morehead State turn a 7-point deficit at 43-36 into a 45-43 lead before Aaron Thompson hit a 3-pointer.
The Titans next play on Monday night at home vs. Cal State Bakersfield in the final non-conference tuneup for the Big West Conference schedule.
