Fullerton, CA - Justin Burns and Bobby Brown each scored 21 points and Scott Cutley added 12 points and 10 rebounds Saturday night to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 76-67 non-conference victory over Texas-San Antonio.
The Titans are now 5-1, equalling their best start since 1998-99. The Roadrunners got 21 points from Kurt Attaway and 17 from Isaiah Allen but fell to 3-5. Fullerton won at San Antonio, 67-63, on Nov. 22.
Fullerton led for all but the opening minute but didn't put away the visitors until midway through the second half. After UTSA had closed from a 12-point halftime deficit to 48-46 with 11:28 to play, the Titans went on an 11-2 run with Brown and Burns each scoring 4 points in the spurt that left the score 59-48 at 8:52.
Attaway responded with back-to-back 3-point baskets but Brown then hit a trey and two free throws on a technical foul on the UTSA bench to get the lead back up to double figures at 64-54. The Titans stretched the lead to as many as 16 points at 76-60 before the Roadrunners scored the game's final 7 points.
The Titans' biggest lead in the first half was 14 points. UTSA hit only 3 of 11 free throw tries to fall behind early.
UTSA hit 10 of 19 3-point field goal tries including 6 of 9 in the second half. UTSA committed 13 turnovers in the first half but only six in the second half.
The Titans next play Tuesday at No. 1-ranked UCLA. UTSA goes home to host TCU on Dec. 6.
