Fullerton, Calif. - Josh Akognon scored 26 points and Frank Robinson added a double-double with 20 points and a game-high 11 rebounds Saturday night to lead Cal State Fullerton to an 85-69 victory over Portland State in an O'Reilly ESPNU Bracket Buster contest.
Fullerton won its fourth in a row and eighth in nine contests to improve to 18-7.
The Vikings got 17 points and 6 rebounds from Deonte Huff but saw a 9-game winning streak halted and they fell to 18-9. Andre Murray had 12 points and Tyrell Mara added 11 for Portland State, which has clinched a share of the Big Sky Conference championship.
Fullerton took control of the game with a 21-5 run midway through the first half that turned a 13-7 deficit into a 28-18 lead with 8:35 to go. The Titans pulled away to a 17-point halftime lead and Portland State never got the disadvantage out of double figures in the second half.
Neither team shot well from the 3-point line but Fullerton made 51 percent overall thanks in part to 24 assists including six by Akognon. Portland State shot only 39 percent fro the floor.
Fullerton hosts Cal State Northridge Thursday night in a battle for first place in the Big West Conference. The Matadors currently have a half-game lead.
