Fullerton, Calif. -
Isiah Umipig scored 24 points and Sedric Martin came off the bench for 13 points and a career-high 7 rebounds Saturday night to lead Cal State Fullerton to an 80-66 win over Montana State in the Sears Bracket Buster series of non-conference games.
Umipig hit 8 of 12 shots including 4 of 5 3-pointers for the Titans (18-7), who won their fifth in a row and eighth in nine starts to improve to 11-1 at home. Shawn Reid scored 20 points, 15 in the second half, and led the way with 6 rebounds for the Bobcats (11-15), who lost their seventh in a row.
Fullerton shot 58 percent from the floor including 62 percent in the first half when the Titans built a 47-24 lead. MSU shot only 40 percent and trailed by as many as 31 points after the Titans scored the first 8 points of the second half to complete a 34-5 run bracketing intermission. After a slow start, MSU had closed to a 21-19 deficit at 8:41 on a pair of free throws by Michael Dison. CSF finished the half with a 26-5 run.
"I'm obviously happy with the win but we played in such spurts, good and bad," said Fullerton Coach Bob Burton. "I don't want to take anything away from Montana State. They didn't quit and they've lost two starting wing players. But I thought our bad play outweighed the good. We had a tremendous advantage with them traveling and all, that's why I'm so discouraged.
"Some of our key guys weren't mentally ready to play. But I was happy with some of the other guys. Sedric was terrific and played 24 quality minutes. Zeke (Umipig) was terrific and Perry Webster is always terrific running the offense. Orane Chin (14 points, 6 rebounds) was great, we couldn't afford to take him out of the game. Kwame Vaughn was playing on a bad ankle and played well enough to help us win the game. And Orlando Brown gave us 9 good minutes."
Leading scorer D. J. Seeley had only 6 points and 4 turnovers and fouled out in 21 minutes. Leading rebounder Omondi Amoke didn't get a single rebound and had 5 points and 5 fouls in only 12 minutes of play.
Fullerton makes its final road trip of the year next week at Pacific and UC Davis. Montana State is at Montana next Saturday.
