Feb. 14, 2008
Fullerton, Calif. - Frank Robinson scored 24 points and Scott Cutley had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds Thursday night as Cal State Fullerton overcame a sloppy start to defeat UC Davis, 94-74, in a Big West Conference men's basketball game.
The win was the sixth in seven games for Fullerton, which improved to 16-7 overall and moved into a virtual tie for first place at 9-3 with Cal State Northridge, which is 8-2.
Dominic Calegari scored 25 points and had 7 rebounds for the Aggies, who lost their seventh game in a row to fall to 8-16. The Aggies are 1-11 on the road this season.
Robinson, a senior from Los Angeles, became the 18th Titan to score 1,000 career points late in the first half and finished the night with 1,014.
Davis jumped out to leads of 8-0 and 19-7, hitting 8 of its first 11 shots, before the Titans broke loose. They tied the game for the first time at 24 and took the lead for good at 30-29 on a Robinson 3-pointer with 3:34 to go in the half, which ended with Fullerton up by 4 points.
The teams exchanged baskets for the first five minutes after intermission before Ray Reed triggered a 10-0 run for a 59-47 lead with 12:30 to play. Davis never cut the margin to single digits.
Fullerton attempted 32 3-point field goals against the Davis zone, one shy of the school record, but hit only 9. The Titans broke the game open with a series of steals and inside baskets. Davis committed 24 turnovers and the Titans had 13 steals led by Josh Akognon with 6.
Cutley had 15 points and 7 rebounds in the second half. With 17 career double-doubles, he is alone in fourth place in the Titans' career list.
Marcus Crenshaw played with a protective mask over his fractured nose, which occurred Saturday night in San Luis Obispo. He had 9 points on 3 3-point field goals. He now has 141 for his career, moving ahead of Richard Morton for fifth place on the Fullerton career list. Akognon also made three to total 80 for the season and tie Bobby Brown (2006-07) for the fourth spot on the single-season CSF list.
Fullerton is 9-3 in conference play for only the second time in school history, matching the start of the 1982-83 team, which finished at 12-4.
The Titans host Pacific Saturday at 4 p.m. in a FSN Prime Ticket televised game. UC Davis hosts UC Santa Barbara.
