Northridge, Calif. - Scott Cutley (19 points and 11 rebounds) and Frank Robinson (14 points and 10 rebounds) both had double-doubles to lead Cal State Fullerton to an 80-72 Big West Conference victory Saturday night at Cal State Northridge.
Jonathan Heard led the way with 13 points for the Matadors, who lost their first Big West game of the year and first home game in nine starts to fall to 15-5, 7-1.
Josh Akognon hit 10 of 10 free throws on his way to 17 points for the Titans, who outscored CSUN 9-0 in the final 1:54 to improve to 14-6 and 7-2. It was Fullerton's eighth win in a row over CSUN and made Head Coach Bob Burton 5-0 in the Matadome, which had a standing-room only crowd of 1,632 including two busloads of Fullerton rooters.
"This was a great college basketball game," said Burton. "It was a terrific win for us. I'm proud of our guys. We stayed pretty calm and kept our composure. We settled down and got better with the ball down the stretch.
"Their pressure takes you out of our offense. But mostly we played together. Everyone passed up a shot to get Frank an open shot and his 3-pointer from the corner (at 47 seconds) was the key basket.
Fullerton won despite committing 22 turnovers, making only 4 of 24 3-point tries and shooting only 40 percent from the floor. Akognon made only 3 of 15 shots, Marcus Crenshaw made only 2 of 11 and Robinosn made only 3 of 10. But the Titans made 24 of 30 free throws and won the rebound battle, 51-43.
Fullerton outscored CSUN 14-4 in the final 4:44 of the first half to take a 46-37 lead at the intermission. But the Matadors opened the second half with a 13-4 surge to forge a tie as Fullerton got only 5 points in the first 10 minutes of the second half.
CSUN pulled out to a 60-52 lead with 9:33 to play but the Titans caught up at 68-68 on Robinson's basket with 4:14 to play.
Fullerton is on the road again next week with games at UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly.
