Titan Men End Home Court Slump, 58-52

Fullerton, Calif. - Jacques Streeter scored 17 points and handed out 4 assists Saturday night as Cal State Fullerton rallied for a 58-52 Big West Conference victory over UC Riverside.
The Titans went above .500 for the first time this season at both 11-10 and 5-4 while the Highlanders fell to 11-9 and 3-5.
Kyle Austin led UCR with 18 points and 10 rebounds, the latter figure matched by Aaron Scott, who had 6 points on 2-of-15 shooting.
Fullerton's Josh Akognon, who came into the game as the nation's No. 8 scorer at 23.4 points per game, scored only 15 points on 5-of-21 shooting including 3 of 15 from the 3-point line. Gerard Anderson had 11 points and a team-high 6 rebounds as Fullerton won its first home conference game in four tries.
The 58-point victory total is the lowest in the 6-year tenure of CSF Coach Bob Burton. Fullerton's last three wins have come after trailing at the half.
Fullerton opened the second half with a 13-5 run capped by Akognon's second 3-pointer of the night for the lead at 37-34 but Austin made back-to-back buckets to put UCR back ahead, 38-37, with 11 minutes to play. The Titans regained the lead for good on an Akognon bucket that triggered a 7-0 run to a 44-38 advantage.
The Highlanders drew within 44-42 before Streeter made a 4-point play at 7:10 for a 48-42 lead. Two Papa Guisse free throws put Fullerton up, 54-48, inside two minutes but UCR's Austin and Christian Soto scored inside to make it 54-52 with 32 seconds remaining. Akognon converted both ends of a one-and-one at 16.9 and Brandon Dowdy missed a 3-pointer from the corner that Marcio Lassiter rebounded with 7.4 seconds left, resulting in two more free throws for the final score.
Fullerton shot 53 percent in the second half to finish at 37 percent and made 5 of 11 treys to finish 7-for-29 (.241). UCR shot only 27 percent in the second half to finish at 36 percent including only 2 of 8 treys in the second half.
Fullerton made only 2 of 18 3-pointers in the first half and shot 28 percent overall for the period. Fourteen offensive rebounds kept the Titans within 5 points at the half, 29-24. UCR used a 10-1 run over more than 6 minutes to go from an 18-15 deficit to a 25-19 lead, its biggest of the half, at 4:01 after a layup by Austin.
Akognon missed his first 10 shots before making a 3-pointer at 3:42.
Fullerton hosts UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly next week while UC Riverside hosts Pacific and UC Davis.
