Former Titan Sharpshooter Josh Akognon Makes NBA Debut

DALLAS -- Former Cal State Fullerton men's basketball player Josh Akognon became the 12th former Titan to appear in the NBA Wednesday night (April 10), playing four minutes and scoring two points to go with an assist for the Dallas Mavericks in their 102-91 loss to the Phoenix Suns at the American Airlines Center.

Akognon, who played two seasons for Fullerton from 2007-09, became the first Titan to appear in an NBA game since Bobby Brown (2003-07) competed for the New Orleans Hornets and Los Angeles Clippers in the 2009-10 season. Akognon, who spent the 2012 preseason with Dallas, was signed to a 10-day contract by the Mavericks on April 3 after averaging nearly 30 points per game in 36 games playing professionally overseas with the Liaoning Jiebao Hunters in China.

Along with Brown, who has also had stints with Sacramento and Minnesota in his NBA career, Akognon joins a select group of Cal State Fullerton men's basketball alums in the NBA alongside Bruce Bowen (Miami, Boston, Philadelphia, San Antonio), Greg Bunch (New York Knicks), Cedric Ceballos (Phoenix, Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas, Detroit, Miami), Kevin Henderson (Golden State, Cleveland), Ozell Jones (San Antonio, Los Angeles Clippers), Richard Morton (Indiana), Mike Niles (Phoenix), Pape Sow (Toronto), Henry Turner (Sacramento), and Leon Wood (Philadelphia, Washington, New Jersey, San Antonio, Atlanta, Sacramento).

A two-time All-Big West Conference selection and the league's player of the year as a senior in 2009, Akognon helped lead the Titans to a Big West Tournament championship and the school's second NCAA Tournament berth as a junior in 2008. Named the tournament's MVP in 2009, Akognon averaged 22.0 points per game in his two seasons as a Titan, good for second all-time in school history, and ranks seventh overall on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,411 points.

He holds the school's single-season record with 764 points as a senior while his 23.9 ppg that season ranks second. Akognon also holds the school record with a perfect 15-for-15 from the line against CSU Bakersfield on Dec. 13, 2008, and holds the season mark with 136 three-point makes in 2008-09.
