Fullerton, Calif. - Former Cal State Fullerton and current major league free-agent outfielder Aaron Rowand has been signed to a five-year contract by the San Francisco Giants announced the Northern California team Wednesday.
Rowand, coming off his best season in the majors, hit .309 with 27 home runs and 89 RBI for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2007, earning his first career Rawlings Gold Glove along the way.
Rowand began his career in Chicago, playing parts of five seasons with the White Sox before being traded to Philadelphia prior to the 2006 season.
Former Titan right-hander Matt Wise was designated for assignment by the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday to make room for newly acquired closer Eric Gagne on the 40-man roster.
Wise was 3-2 with a 4.19 ERA in 56 games for the Brewers in 2007, giving up 25 earned runs over 53 2/3 innings. The Brewers now have 10 days to trade Wise, release him or assign him to a minor league team. It is likely that the right-hander, with seven years of big league service, will be picked up by another team.
Wise broke into the big leagues in 2000 with the Anaheim Angels and signed with the Brewers in 2004.
Both Rowand and Wise played together for Cal State Fullerton from 1996 to 1997 under Head Coaches Augie Garrido and George Horton. Rowand finished his Titans career in 1998.
