Family Fun Day Wraps up Fall Workouts

Nov. 19, 2011

Fullerton, Calif. - Greg Velazquez's ninth inning flare into left field drove home the tying run and Chad Wallach's single two batters later won it for Carlos Lopez's "Tricky Rickys" squad, defeating Matt Orloff's "Niners" 4-1 in Cal State Fullerton's final baseball scrimmage of the fall.

Lopez and Orloff picked the teams that squared off on Family Fun Day Saturday afternoon at Goodwin Field. The scrimmage followed a successful free youth clinic put for hundreds of kids by the 2012 baseball roster.

Koby Gauna took the loss as he extended into an unexpected third inning of work in the bottom of the ninth. Matt Chapman singled to lead off the frame for the Rickys trailing 1-0, and then scooted to third on a perfectly executed hit and run by Lopez. Velazquez tied it with a soft liner to left for the third straight single. Gauna ended his outing by hitting Anthony Hutting to load the bases.

Wallach stepped in against reliever Michael Lorenzen and sharply singled to left on the right-hander's first offering for the game winner. Because it was a scrimmage, the game continued in the bottom of the ninth, allowing all four of Gauna's base runners to score. Jesse Jenner has a sacrifice fly, and Keegan Dale drove one home with a run-scoring groundout.

Converted catcher Dimitri DeLaFuente picked up the win on the mound by tossing the final two innings of the game. After Floro, Tyler Peitzmeier (1 IP), Christian Coronado (2 IP) and Willie Kuhl (1 IP) combined for four scoreless innings of relief. Coronado picked up three punch outs including two of them in the seventh inning.

The Niners, without a hit through the first three innings, got on the board first in the top of the fourth. Austin Kingsolver led off against starting pitcher Dylan Floro with a triple to right. Derek Legg promptly drove him home a batter later with a chopper that got through the middle infielders for an RBI single.

Floro battled the Niners' Grahamm Wiest for the first third of the game. The tandem will likely be part of the Titans starting rotation come the spring. Floro scattered three hits over four innings. He allowed just one run while fanning two. Wiest allowed two hits in three innings and struck out one.

Lopez and Chapman had two hits to lead the way for the Tricky Rickys in the come-from-behind victory. The Rickys had seven total hits.

Lorenzen had two of the Niners' six hits on the afternoon.

Dave Birosak and J.D. Davis combined for three scoreless innings in the Niners' loss.
