Titans and 'Dores to Scrimmage in Nashville

Oct. 20, 2011

Fullerotn, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton will make an unprecedented fall road trip across the country to play a pair of scrimmages against Vanderbilt this Saturday and Sunday at Hawkins Field in Nashville, Tenn.

It will be the first action the Titans will have against another team under new skipper Rick Vanderhook, and the long-time TItan coach has no preconceived notions of how his new team will perform.

"We aren't going into this weekend's games with any expectations," Vanderhook said.

"The trip to Vanderbilt will act as a mid-fall report card for us. We are going to play the games and see if we can apply what we have learned in our brief time together on another team."

The Titans and their new coaching staff have only been together for 10 official workouts this fall.

Both scrimmages will be full nine-inning affairs with an additional three innings tacked on the end for a total of 12 innings a day. Each scrimmage will have GameTracker and video feeds from the home of the Commodores.

The Titans' official workout period will end on Nov. 19 with a free youth clinic and a full intersquad scrimmage on Family Fun Day at Goodwin Field.

PREVIOUS HISTORY: This weekend will be the first meeting between the Titans and the Commodores.

HOW THESE SCRIMMAGES FIGURE: The two scrimmages will count against the Titans' 2012 56-game schedule but will not count in their overall standings or records - they are just scrimmages. The Titans will play just 54 games in the spring.

THE TWO PROGRAMS: Vanderbilt has fielded a baseball team since 1886 (except three years during World War II - 1944-46) and has sent nine teams to the NCAA postseason - six of them under current head coach Tim Corbin. This past June, the Commodores were one of the eight teams to open up the College World Series' new digs, T.D. Ameritrade Park Omaha, in their first ever trip to the CWS. They finished tied for third in the nation with a 2-2 record in Omaha.

Cal State Fullerton has had a baseball team since 1964 (as a club team) but has only been an NCAA Div. I team since 1975. Since then, the Titans have won four national championships over four decades (1979, 1984, 1995, 2004), sent 33 teams (in 37 years) to the NCAA postseason, and reached the College World Series on 16 occasions. The Titans last played in Omaha in 2009. Current Head Coach Rick Vanderhook has been a part of three of the Titans' four national championship teams - one as a player (1984) and two as an assistant coach to both Augie Garrido (1995) and George Horton (2004).

PITCHING PROSPECTS: Rick Vanderhook and pitching coach Kirk Saarloos will be sending a brigade of pitchers to the mound this weekend, with each hurler on a pitch count. On Saturday, the Titans will pitch RHP Dylan Floro (Jr., Merced, Calif.), RHP J.D. Davis (Fr., Elk Grove, Calif.) and RHP Christian Coronado (So., Hemet, Calif.). Saturday's game will feature LHP Kenny Mathews (Fr., Diamond Bar, Calif.), Grahamm Wiest (R-Fr., Orange, Calif.) and Koby Gauna (Fr., Torrance, Calif.). The Titan bullpen will be used as needed with innings coming from Dimitri DeLaFuente (RHP, Jr., Covina, Calif.), Willie Kuhl (RHP, Fr., Mission Viejo, Calif.), Tyler Peitzmeier (LHP, Fr., Yutan, Neb.), Chad Wallach (RHP/INF, Soph., Yorba Linda, Calif.) and Michael Lorenzen (RHP/OF, So., Anaheim, Calif.).

HOW THEY MIGHT LOOK: Here is a brief rundown of who to expect and where for this weekend's scrimmage... This is not a depth chart, players are in no particular order:

C: Jared Deacon (So., Elk Grove, Calif.) and Casey Watkins (Jr., Valencia, Calif.)
1B: Chad Wallach (So., Yorba Linda, Calif.), Carlos Lopez (Jr., Northridge, Calif.) and J.D. Davis (Fr., Elk Grove, Calif.)
2B: Matt Orloff (Jr., Simi Valley, Calif.) and Derek Legg (Sr., Murrieta, Calif.)
SS: Keegan Dale (So., Riverside, Calif.)

HONKY TONK BLUES: The Titans will be without the services of four injured players this weekend in Nashville. Ivory Thomas is out for the rest of the fall after having his meniscus surgically repaired in September. Jose Cardona will also miss the rest of the fall with an injured patella tendon. Richy Pedroza will miss approximately three weeks with a separated left shoulder and Anthony Trajano is listed as day-to-day with a pulled hamstring.
