Fullerton, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton freshman Michael Lorenzen was named the Big West Player of the Week after leading the Titans to a three-game sweep of cross-town rival Long Beach State last weekend.
After missing Tuesday's game at Pepperdine with wrist soreness, the centerfielder returned to lead the Titans in nearly every offensive category on the weekend, going 7-for-12 (.583) with six RBI and three stolen bases.
On Friday, the freshman tripled and scored the game-winning run in the fourth inning of the Titans 4-2 win over the 49ers. On the night he finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and reached base all four times to the plate.
In Saturday's wacky 14-12 win, the Fullerton High School product doubled home two and singled home two in his first two at bats as the Titans jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the second inning. After the 49ers came all the way back to tie and go ahead, Lorenzen wound up scoring the game-winning run in the eighth after singling and stealing second.
He wound up going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBI.
In the series finale, his sacrifice fly drove home the game-winner in the Titans' eventual 6-1 triumph. Lorenzen was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored on Sunday.
Lorenzen is the first freshman of the season to win Big West Player of the Week accolades. It is his first career weekly honor.
Lorenzen and the Titans will face UCLA and LMU this week with no games scheduled for this weekend.
