Fullerton, Calif. - Noe Ramirez faced only three men over the minimum over 8 innings and Nick Ramirez hit a tie-breaking home run to set up his 13th save on Friday the 13th as Cal State Fullerton defeated Long Beach State, 4-2, in the opening game of a 3-game Big West Conference series.
Noe Ramirez allowed only 1 run and 2 hits while striking out 7 and retiring 22 of the final 23 men he faced to go to 8-2 overall and 6-0 at home. Nick Ramirez hit his Big West-leading ninth home run with one out in the fourth as the No. 9-ranked Titans improved to 34-14 and 15-4 in the Big West. The 49ers fell to 24-23 and 8-8.
Two errors by shortstop Keegan Dale set up an unearned Long Beach run in the ninth but Dale then made a nice over the shoulder catch of Brennan Metzger's pop fly to end the game. It was Nick Ramirez' 31st career save and his 14th for Noe Ramirez, who is no relation.
Nick Ramirez drove a 2-2 Andrew Gagnon (4-8) pitch over the right-centerfield fence for a 2-1 lead in the fourth. One out later, Michael Lorenzen tripled to left center and scored on a passed ball. Lorenzen picked up an RBI in the bottom of the eighth with a bases-loaded ground ball.
Long Beach scored in the first inning. Matt Hibbert walked, went to second on a ground out, to third on a wild pitch and scored on Ino Patron's two-out single to center.
The series resumes Saturday night at 6 p.m. with Pill going against Ryan Strufing.
