Fullerton, Calif. - A three-run UC Davis fifth inning was enough firepower for the Aggies to beat No. 15 Cal State Fullerton 3-2 in a Big West Conference showdown Saturday night at Goodwin Field. The Titans fall to 25-15 on the year and 10-4 in league play, while the Aggies improve to 26-14, 7-4.
Brad McAtee allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits over seven innings of work to up his season record to 6-3. Andy Suiter and Justin Fitzgerald pitched two innings of scoreless ball, with Fitzgerald picking up his seventh save of the season.
Losing pitcher Daniel Renken (4-3) surrendered all three runs in the fifth, as the Aggies batted around and picked up four of their 11 hits on the evening in the frame. Ty Kelly singled home Ryan Royster who tripled a batter earlier for the first Davis run, then Ryan Scoma drove home the tying and go-ahead runs with a double to the wall in right.
Fullerton posted runs in the first and third innings, both driven in by outfielder Erik Komatsu. Komatsu drove home the first run of the game with a double over the right-fielder Kyle Mihaylo's head, plating Josh Fellhauer who singled to lead off the bottom of the first. In the Third, Komatsu lifted a sac-fly to again score Fellhauer.
The Titans left eight of their 10 runners left on base and connected for just four hits over the last six innings of the game, with two hits coming with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Fitzgerald fanned Komatsu with the tying and winning runs on first and second to end the game.
Fellhauer was the only Titans with two hits on the evening, while four Aggies (Kelly, Evan Hudson, Scoma, and Kevin James) each collected a pair for the visitors.
Jason Dovel held Davis in check in relief of Renken, tossing 2.2 innings of one-hit ball, picking up a two strikeouts in the loss.
The two teams will meet up Sunday afternoon in the series finale at Goodwin Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. Cory Arbiso will be on the mound for Fullerton.
