Fullerton, Calif. - Gary Brown had a perfect day at the plate with 4 hits and Tyler Pill pitched five shutout innings Sunday as Cal State Fullerton rolled to a 9-2 Big West Conference victory and series sweep over Cal Poly SLO.
The win was the Titans' sixth in a row and 12th in 14 games and improved their records to 24-13 overall and 10-2 in the Big West. Cal Poly has lost 20 of 24 games and fell to 10-26 and 3-9.
Starter Pill (4-4) allowed only two baserunners in five innings. Bobby Crocker singled in the first and David Van Ostrand was hit by a pitch in the fifth. Dylan Floro pitched the final 3.1 innings for his second save. Cal Poly starter Eugene Wright (1-3) gave up 6 runs, 4 earned, in 5.2 innings and took the loss.
Brown had two doubles and two stolen bases as well as scoring from second on an errant pickoff throw. His only flaw was getting picked off second in the third. Richie Pedroza had 3 hits and finished the week of four starts at third base 5-for-12 and reached base 8 times.
The Titans scored in the first inning for the third time in the series. Brown doubled off the wall in left-center, went to third on an errant pickoff throw by Wright and scored as Carlos Lopez grounded out to short.
Fullerton added two runs in the second after two were out. Nick Ramirez singled to extend his hitting streak to 16 games and Joey Siddons doubled down the left-field line. Pedroza lined a 2-run single through the hole between third and short.
Two balls fielded by Cal Poly second baseman Matt Jensen became two Fullerton runs in the fifth. Pedroza hit a one-out grounder into the hole that went off Jensen's glove and Pedroza legged it into a double. He went to third on a fly ball and scored when Brown's grounder was fielded by Jensen on the outfield grass but he had no play on the speedy Brown. Brown then proceeded to steal second on a delayed steal and come all the way home when Wright threw a pickoff throw into centerfield.
Kevin Rath relieved Pill to start the sixth. Walks to Luke Yoder and Crocker and a single by Matt Jensen ended the shutout bid and Floro had to come in to get Ross Brayton to ground out and end the inning.
Fullerton kept on scoring. Ramirez' two-out double scored Pill, who had stayed in the game as designated hitter and singled to lead off the sixth. Brown singled home a run in the seventh, another scored on Lopez' ground out to second and a third on Pill's RBI single.
Cal Poly got its second run in the ninth on a hit batter and two singles around a double play. J. J. Thompson got the RBI hit.
The Titans next play a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon at University of San Diego
