Los Angeles - Anthony Trajano and Carlos Lopez had three hits apiece to pace an 11-hit Cal State Fullerton attack as the No. 8 Titans shut out Loyola Marymount, 5-0, Tuesday afternoon at Page Stadium in non-conference baseball action.
Fullerton improves to 24-9 with its fourth shutout of the year. LMU falls to 19-12.
Colin O'Connell (4-2) faced just one batter over the minimum through six innings for the win. The right-hander allowed just two Lion hits to Zac Fujimoto in the third and Ryan Hawthorne in the fifth. He struck out four without a walk. The Titans handed him a 5-0 lead over the first three innings that stuck. Ray Hernandez, David Hurlbut and Chris Devenski finished the game, each tossing a scoreless inning.
Trajano doubled with an out in the first and was followed by a five pitch walk to Nick Ramirez. Tyler Pill cashed in the eventual game-winner with a single off losing pitcher Jacob Smigelski (0-1), scoring Trajano. Two batters later, Lopez's fly to left scored Ramirez.
In the second Jared Deacon led off with a flare single to left center and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a walk to Ivory Thomas, Trajano singled to right but Hawthorne had trouble picking it up allowing Deacon to score. Ramirez then sent a blooped ball to right that fell in front of Hawthorne to score Thomas.
The Titans tacked on a run in the third and chased Smigelski. A leadoff double to Michael Lorenzen ended the right-hander's afternoon. An infield single to shortstop by Lopez moved Lorenzen to third and Blake Barber's flyball to left scored him.
Lion relievers Matt Florer, Jeremy Burrell, Sean McIntyre, and Chris Eusabio worked efficiently over seven innings of relief of Smigelski. The foursome scattered five Titan hits and struck out four.
The Titans will return home this weekend to host UC Santa Barbara in a three-game Big West Conference series at Goodwin Field.
