San Diego, Calif. - Richy Pedroza had three hits, drove in two and scored two more in support of Koby Gauna, who limited the Aztecs to a run on two hits for five innings as No. 14 Cal State Fullerton upended San Diego State, 7-1, in non-conference action at Tony Gwynn Stadium Tuesday night.
The Titans (18-10) sweep the 2-game season series from the Aztecs (14-16) and improve to 38-10 all-time. Fullerton has now won the last 8 meetings and 19 of the last 21.
Freshman Gauna (3-2) worked five or more innings for the sixth time this year. He allowed only an unearned run in the third inning and struck out four with only one walk. Dimitri DeLaFuente, Willie Kuhl and Dave Birosak combined for four scoreless innings of relief for Fullerton.
San Diego State committed five errors which led to four unearned Titan runs. Unlucky starter Philip Walby (0-1) took the loss as just one of the four runs scored off of him were earned. Four of the Aztecs' five errors came during his five innings on the mound. Walby struck out three without a walk.
Hits by leadoff hitter Pedroza and Anthony Trajano set the table in the first for Fullerton. Pedroza, who had scurried to third on Trajano's single to left-center, scored on Carlos Lopez's fielder's choice grounder.
Ivory Thomas led off the second with a swinging bunt single and then moved to third when catcher Jake Romanski's throw went wild down the first baseline on a back pick. Anthony Hutting followed with a groundball that went under first baseman Jomel Torres' glove to bring home Thomas with run No. 2. After a sacrifice that moved Hutting to third, Austin Kingsolver's chopper into the six hole scored Hutting to make it 3-0.
Gauna retired the first eight men he faced but a two-out fielding error by shortstop Trajano opened the door for an unearned run in the Aztec third. Evan Potter, who reached on Trajano's miscue, stole second and then scored on Tim Zier's double into the left field corner to cut the Titan lead to 3-1.
Two more errors from the Aztec aided in another Titan run in the fifth. Kingsolver reached with one out when Walby's throw to first on his bunt sailed wide. Jared Deacon then seemingly hit into an inning ending double play, but Evan Potter dropped Torres' throw from first at short, allowing Deacon to reach and Kingsolver to advance all the way to third. Pedroza dropped down a bunt to the right of the mound that scored Kingsolver and give Gauna an insurance run.
Michael Lorenzen avenged three previous strikeouts with an RBI-single in the top of the eighth to extend his personal hitting streak to 10 games. His single to right-center scored Pedroza, who walked to lead off the inning and was bunted to second.
Pedroza's third hit of the night scored Kingsolver (bunt single/error) from second and a passed ball charged to Romanski scored Deacon (HBP) accounted for the Titans' sixth and seventh runs in the ninth.
