Davis, Calif. - Blake Barber's seventh inning double to right tied the game and Ivory Thomas' single to left drove home the game winner as No. 12 Cal State Fullerton completed the three-game sweep of UC Davis with a 4-2 Big West Conference victory Sunday afternoon at Dobbins Baseball Stadium.
The Titans win their 8th in a row and 12th in their last 13 games and improve to 20-8 on the year. The win also locked down the team's fourth series sweep of the year and boosted their league record to 3-0. The Aggies dropped their 7th ball game over their last nine and fall to 5-17, 0-3.
Tyler Pill fresh off striking out 11 Rainbows at Hawaii last weekend, again tied his career high by fanning 11 Aggies over 7.0 innings on Sunday. The junior right-hander scattered six hits and walked just one to improve to 4-0 on the year.
Dayne Quist (1-3) put in a fine effort for the Aggies and held a 2-1 lead as late as the top of the seventh. The southpaw worked 7. 1 innings allowed nine hits and struck out six in the loss.
Ramirez, who finished the afternoon 3-for-3, drove home the game's first run in the first. Thomas, aboard on a walk and at second on a Richy Pedroza sac bunt, scored when Ramirez's first hit of the day chopped into the outfield out of reach of the Aggie middle infielder.
Davis tied the game at 1-1 in the third on a pair of hits by Daniel Cepin and Justin Andrade and a run-scoring squib groundout to first by Brett Morgan.
In the fifth, the Aggies took their first lead of the series on their only extra base hit in the three games, a solo home run to left by Shortstop Scott Heylman. The home run was the first of the year for Heylman, and the second of the year allowed by Pill.
The game remained 2-1 in the Aggies favor until the top of the seventh when the Titans scored twice to take a 3-2 lead. Casey Watkins singled and stole second to lead off the frame and then came around to score on Barber's double to right. The third baseman took the outside pitch and hit it high into the wind and out to the wall in right tying the game at 2-2. Barber moved up on a Jared Deacon bunt and then scored when he saw Thomas' grounder get by the diving third baseman into left field.
Fullerton added an insurance run in the eighth when Michael Lorenzen doubled home Ramirez who was aboard after getting hit with a 3-2 pitch by Quist.
In the series, the Titans pitching staff held the Aggies to 2 runs on 18 hits while striking out 26.
Fullerton will return home this week for a midweek match up with Pepperdine on Tuesday at 6 p.m. and then will host UC Irvine Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Big West Conference play. Friday night's game will begin at 7 p.m., Saturday's at 6 p.m. and Sunday's at 2 p.m. due to the ESPNU broadcast that will be taking place from Goodwin Field.
