Fullerton, Calif. - Richy Pedroza's two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning Friday afternoon rallied Cal State Fullerton to a 2-1 non-conference baseball victory over Long Beach State.
Dylan Floro (2-2) scattered 7 singles over 8 innings to get the win and Michael Lorenzen pitched a scorless ninth for his seventh save for the No. 15-ranked Titans (11-6), who beat the 49ers for the 13th time in the last 14 meetings of their long rivalry. Reliever Matt Johnson (0-2) took the loss for Long Beach (5-11), which lost for the eighth time in nine games.
Fullerton stranded 11 runners through the first seven innings before breaking through after two outs in the eighth. Derek Legg, a transfer from Long Beach State facing his former team for the first time, reached base for the fourth time when he was hit by a pitch. Pinch-hitter Greg Velazquez singled to left and Ivory Thomas beat out a chopper over the mound to load the bases. Pedroza lined a 3-2 pitch up the middle to score pinch-runner Austin Diemer and Velazquez, who beat a wide throw home from centerfielder Brennan Metzger.
The 49ers had led since the second inning when Michael Hill's two-out single to center scored Metzger, who had reached on a fielder's choice and stolen second base.
Long Beach starter Shawn Stuart went 5.2 scoreless innings. He twice ended innings with the bases loaded by retiring Casey Watkins.
Fullerton has played four 1-run games in a row with the winning team scoring in its final at bat each time.
The two teams will meet again tonight at 7 p.m.
