Titans with Huge Series Win Over No. 4 Frogs
Feb. 27, 2011
Fort Worth, Tex. - A clutch one-out, RBI-double by junior Nick Ramirez in the eighth, and a one-out, RBI-single in the top of the ninth inning by freshman Michael Lorenzen, lifted No. 12 Cal State Fullerton to a come-from -behind 2-1 non-conference win over No. 4 TCU Sunday afternoon at Lupton Stadium.
With the win, the Titans improve to 4-3 on the year and earn the series victory after a 4-1 loss on Friday and an 8-4 win on Saturday. The series loss for the Horned Frogs is their first since 2009. TCU drops to 4-3.The Titans and Frogs have each won two series at the other's field since 2008.
Starter Colin O'Connell put in another fantastic effort in the series finale, allowing just 1 run on 5 hits over 7 innings of work, but didn't figure in the decision. Dylan Floro (1-1) nabbed his first win of the year with 1.1 innings behind O'Connell, allowing 2 hits and striking out 3 before handing off to Ramirez, who struck out the final two batters for his second save.
TCU gave starter Andrew Mitchell a one-run advantage over O'Connell and the Titans by scoring the game's first run in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman Brett Johnson tripled over Titan left fielder Anthony Hutting's head with one out in the inning and came around quickly to score as senior Jimmie Pharr sent a double past Hutting.
The Frogs went to their bullpen in the top of the sixth with Mitchell leaving with the lead. Trent Appleby (0-1) worked four innings in relief, but suffered the loss after surrendering the two Titan runs on six hits. Mitchell worked out of a number of jams, but left with pretty good numbers, having allowed just one hit over five innings of work.
The Titans tied the game in the eighth inning after back-to-back, one-out singles by middle infielders Richy Pedroza and Anthony Trajano set up Ramirez's big at bat. Ramirez pulled Appleby's first pitch inside the first base bag and drove home Pedroza to even the score at 1-1.
In the top of the ninth, Hutting split the right-center gap to lead things off and gave way to pinch runner Casey Watkins. Watkins moved to third on Zach Tanida's ground out up the middle, and scored the game winner when Lorenzen's line-drive single cleared the shortstop Taylor Featherston's glove.
Ramirez led the Titans with two of Fullerton's seven hits on the day. Pharr had two of TCU's seven hits.
Cal State Fullerton returns to action on Tuesday (Mar. 1), as they host Loyola Marymount (6-1) at Goodwin Field. Jake Floethe (0-0, 3.18 ERA) will be on the mound for Fullerton.
