LUBBOCK, Texas.--- The College Baseball Foundation released its 2017 initial watch lists for the Brooks Wallace Award, given to the nation's top shortstop, and National Pitcher of the Year Award. Cal State Fullerton freshman shortstop Sahid Valenzuela and junior left-handed pitcher John Gavin were both named to the respective watch lists on Tuesday.
Valenzuela is one of 75 shortstops in Division I college baseball named to the 2017 Brooks Wallace Award Watch List. The Yuma, Arizona native leads the Titans in average (.366) and multi-hit games (14). He's picked up hits in 13 of his last 15 games, with 10 of those being multi-hit performances. He's scored runs in six his last 10 games. He also helps anchors one of the top defenses in the country. Fullerton's .981 fielding percentage ranks 13th in the nation.
Gavin has certainly proved to be one of the best pitchers in the nation thus far. The San Jose, California native boasts the lowest ERA and most wins over any Titan starter, owning a 5-0 record with a 2.22 ERA in 52.2 innings pitched this season. Gavin was named Big West Pitcher of the Week and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association's National Pitcher of the Week after pitching a career-high 8.0 innings against New Mexico 3/19. In his eight innings, the San Jose, Calif. native allowed just two hits, zero earned runs, zero walks and struck out a career-high 14 batters. The 14 strikeouts were the most any Titan had accumulated since Thomas Eshelman also collected 14 on May 30, 2015 vs. Arizona State. Gavin's five wins is second most in the conference, while he's held the opposition to a .230 batting average.
