Northridge, Calif. - Both the men and women of the Cal State Fullerton cross country team bounced back Saturday from their disappointing showings in Oregon to capture third place for the men and fourth for the women at the Northridge Invitational hosted by CSUN.
John Carrell (24:56.21) and Tyler Reed (24:57.77) ran fifth and sixth over the 8K campus course to lead the men in very close scoring. UC Irvine took first with 50 points followed by Houston with 52 and Fullerton with 56.
"It was a very positive day for the Titans, definitely a step forward," said Head Coach John Elders. "Both the men and women were much improved from two weeks ago. They responded to the challenge.
"John and Tyler and Marco Zaragoza (10th place) led the men. At Oregon, UC Irvine placed their top two guys ahead of our top two and their third was ahead of our third. Even though we didn't beat them today, we competed better this time -- we flip-flpped -- our top two men were ahead of their top two and our third man was ahead of their third man. We positioned ourselves better in the middle of the race and followed through with what we had talked about beforehand.
"For the women, Lauren ran her best race of the year -- she really came on strong in the last mile -- and so did Lexie. Grace Gonzales (19th) and Tijerra Lynch (20th) gave us a nice group of four up near the front, all within five seconds of one another."
