May Paces Titans on Opening Day of NCAA West Regional Action

AUSTIN, Texas—Four of the seven Titan Track and Field NCAA qualifiers competed on the opening day of the 2013 NCAA West Regional Championships, with Javon May leading the way with his 30th place finish in the men's 400-meter hurdle prelims Thursday afternoon at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

 

May ran a time of 52.66 in the 400-meter hurdles and finished in sixth place in heat two. Deena Pierce also competed in the women's 400-meter hurdles, running a time of 1:01.99 while placing sixth in heat four and 42nd overall.

 

Later in the day both Katie Wilson and Morgan Thompson took to the track, as they ran in the women's 400-meter prelims. Wilson placed seventh in heat six and 40th overall, recording a time of 55.45. Thompson ran a time of 59.75, to place eighth in heat three and 47th overall.

 

Thursday marked the end of what was very impressive 2013 campaign for May, Pierce, Wilson, and Thompson, as neither of the four qualified for Friday's quarterfinal.

 

Day two of regional action will feature Ashley Sims, as she will compete in the 200-meter dash prelims at 8:00 p.m. CT on Friday. Bryan Luther will represent the Titan men, as he will also take part in the men's 200-meter dash prelims tomorrow at 8:25 p.m.

 

Walter Whitaker is still yet to take the field. He will compete on Saturday in the men's triple jump at 6 p.m. CT.

200-meter dash- First Round: Friday, May 24 @ 8:00 p.m. CT…ranks 53rd in the NCAA West Region and ranks 37th in this weekend's field…finished the conference season with the third best time in the Big West, running a personal best time of 23.78 at the 2013 Big West Track and Field Championships

200-meter dash- Quarterfinals: Saturday, May 25 @ 7:35 p.m. CT…top three from six "first round" heats, plus the next six fastest times, advance to the quarterfinals (24).

 

Bryan Luther

200-meter dash- First Round: Friday, May 24 @ 8:25 p.m. CT…ranks 87th in the NCAA West Region and ranks 46th in this weekend's field…finished the conference season with the third best time in the Big West, running a personal best time of 21.34 at the 2013 Big West Track and Field Championships

200-meter dash- Quarterfinals: Saturday, May 25 @ 7:50 p.m. CT…top three from six "first round" heats, plus the next six fastest times, advance to the quarterfinals (24).

Triple jump - First Round: Saturday, May 25 @ 6:00 p.m. CT…ranks 40th in the NCAA West Region and ranks 37th in this weekend's field…finished the conference season with the fourth best leap in the Big West, recording a personal best jump of 49-11.75 at the 2013 Big West Track and Field Championships

*The 16 best marks, after tiebreakers, will qualify from the first round of three preliminary attempts to the final round of three tries. The top 12 advance the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore.
