Greetings from the Titan House!
&\#8232;To begin, I would like to welcome back all of our Cal State Fullerton student-athletes as they embark upon their spring semester.
As it has been a couple of months since my last Quinn's Corner, I thought it best to provide a recap of our fall sports programs: The biggest news was, of course, the wonderful success of our women's volleyball program. Through the years we have seen steady improvement under the direction of Head Coach Carolyn Zimmerman. This season it culminated in a series of "firsts" and honors:
&\#8232;&\#8232;&\#149; First NCAA Tournament appearance.&\#8232;&\#8232;
&\#149; First Big West Championship&\#8232;&\#8232;&\#149; 26-5 regular season record, including a 16-1 record at home
&\#8232;&\#8232;&\#149; Carolyn Zimmerman was named Big West Coach of the Year&\#8232;&\#8232;
&\#149; Erin Saddler was named Big West Player of the Year
&\#8232;&\#8232;&\#149; And it will be soon announced that one of our players will be participating in training block with USA Volleyball.
&\#8232;&\#8232;In other fall sports, our men's soccer team advanced to the championship game of the Big West Conference Tournament, our women's soccer team finished in the middle of the league pack and our men's and women's cross country athletes were competitive in many of their meets.
Wrestling, women's tennis and gymnastics and men's and women's basketball are now in full swing. All of our teams are showing a lot of spirit and fight. Recently, both of our basketball teams defeated our arch-rival Long Beach State on the same night and in the same week that our dance team won their tenth national championship by besting the 49ers.
Both the wrestling and gymnastics programs are approaching the final stages of fund-raising efforts to survive. Any extra financial assistance you can provide between now and March 1 would be greatly appreciated.&\#8232;&\#8232;
In the next several weeks, our men's and women's golf, track & field, softball and baseball teams will fill the Cal State Fullerton athletic calendar until, hopefully, June in Omaha we can make another trip to the College World Series at the new TD Ameritrade Park.
&\#8232;In other Titan news:&\#8232;&\#8232;
&\#149; Our CSUF students passed a referendum that will provide an additional \$100,000 to \$125,000 annually to Titan athletics. This will be a great help toward filling our budget shortfall.&\#8232;&\#8232;
&\#149; Former Titan and NBA great Bruce Bowen was recently on campus -- and got to see our men beat UC Santa Barbara -- to announce the inaugural Bruce Bowen Invitational Golf Tournament, which will take place on Aug. 15 at Oak Creek Golf Club in Irvine. Proceeds from the tournament will be used to provide summer school tuition, books and room & board for our men's basketball student-athletes.
&\#149; The excitement is beginning to build for the inaugural Folino Invitational Golf Tournament on March 20-22, also at Oak Creek. Amateurs plus 10 men's and seven women's teams will be competing.&\#8232;&\#8232;
&\#149; The Diamond Club-funded padded outfield wall in Goodwin Field has been completed.&\#8232;&\#8232;
&\#149; New facility funds have been diverted to athletics, and the following improvements will be made over the next several months: a golf practice area will be built near the Titan House; a new video board will be installed in Goodwin Field; Historic Titan Gym will receive particular attention, as the malfunctioning drop-down scoreboard will be removed and replaced by new scoreboards on the east and west walls and the Gym will receive a new interior paint job and a vastly improved lighting system.&\#8232;&\#8232;
&\#149; Improving opportunities for funding student-athlete scholarships will be the main focus of our Titan Athletics Club. New programs for booster / student-athlete interaction will be announced soon.
&\#149; Nominations are now being sought for the fourth class of inductees into the Titan Athletics Hall of Fame. &\#8232;&\#8232;
While there are certainly some wonderful things going on in the world of Cal State Fullerton athletics, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that we, and the state of California, are in the midst of a severe budget crisis: our scholarship costs have increased dramatically; curtailed student enrollment is reducing revenue from student fees away from athletics; and the athletics department budget received substantial cuts just like everyone else on campus.&\#8232;&\#8232;&\#8232;&\#8232;
While I am truly gratified that donations to Titan athletics have increased, despite our current economy, the remainder of the 2010-11 school year and beyond will, nonetheless, bring a series of challenges. Tough decisions will need to be made that will affect our student-athletes and programs. The decisions that we make will not always prove to be popular. However, I can promise you that they will be well thought out and will be made in the best interests of Cal State Fullerton athletics.
&\#8232;&\#8232;I'd love to hear some feedback on this report, and things that you'd like to know about. You can always e-mail me at email@example.com.
