Welcome Back Letter from Athletic Director Jim Donovan

Jim Donovan Welcome back Titan Family!

As the sun sets on yet another summer, I would like to welcome all of our faculty, staff, coaches, and, especially, the student-athletes, back to campus for, what is sure to be, another successful season here at Cal State Fullerton in 2013-14.

The sights and sounds of a new academic year are all around us and I am excited to welcome everyone to, what is sure to be, another successful athletic season here at Cal State Fullerton in 2013-14. In fact, we in the athletic department are well underway as women's soccer and men's soccer have hit the pitch for their first matches of the year with women's volleyball and cross country not far behind.

Since I joined the University last December, it has been a whirlwind of activity here in the department. We have ushered in a new era in our basketball programs with the hiring of women's head coach Daron Park and men's head coach Dedrique Taylor as well as seeing another first-year head coach, Kelly Ford, begin the process of building the softball program into a national contender once again.

Last season, we celebrated three Big West Conference titles in women’s soccer, men’s golf, and baseball, lauded numerous all-conference and All-America selections, honored four conference coaches of the year, and celebrated yet another run deep into the postseason by our Titans on the diamond. This season, we expect more from all of our programs.

There is no reason we cannot win Big West Conference championships every year. We are in one of the most talent-rich areas of the country when it comes to athletics and we strive to put the “student” in “student-athlete,” recruiting those who shine in the classroom, in the community, and on the fields of play.

That being said, we will try to win every game every year and we will put forth our best  effort. We are committed to out-working our competition and doing things the "best way" in order to be successful. Not only are we coaches, administrators, and staff, we are educators. While we strive to be successful on the field, we are preparing our young men and women for their years beyond the playing fields, providing them with the life lessons of preparation, teamwork, and dedication, that athletics teaches so well and arming them with traits that serve everyone throughout their life no matter their career path.

In a new feature to be debuted shortly, I invite fans, supporters, and friends of Cal State Fullerton athletics to submit questions for a new monthly column entitled "ASK JIM," in an effort to enhance the communication between our fans and the department and keep all abreast of what's going on in Titan Athletics.  Our Sports Media Director, Jason Spencer, will select a few questions each month for me to answer. We will post the answers at the beginning of the second week of each month.

We have tremendous student-athletes on our campus in all of our sports, all striving to become greater on and off the field. We invite everyone to join us in celebrating our student-athletes throughout the year and join us at one of our athletic events. While you're at it, bring a friend… or three. We'll see you in the stands.

GO TITANS!
